Hey…We Missed You Last Night!

The Sidewinders hosted their first Fireworks Friday of the season last night…unfortunately, only a handful of you decided to take advantage of this great entertainment option.  It’s a pity, really.  The 2,600+ fans who were at the Park were treated to another great game of baseball (even if the home team lost, 7 – 6), followed by some sensational fireworks and the season’s first opportunity for kids to run the bases.

The Winders featured a slightly different line up last night:  neither Jamie D’Antona nor Dave Krynzel started.  New Winder’s starting pitcher, Billy Buckner, didn’t have a great night, and left the game after four innings, trailing 4 to 5.  Evan MacLane came in to relieve and he looked outstanding through two innings before showing a side of him we saw too often last year:  gave up two runs in the next two-thirds of an inning.  BUT.  We saw some impressive things from other new guys!  Jesus Merchan successfully stole a base and Javier Brito hit a two-run homer for the Snakes in the sixth (at the time that gave us the lead).  I can’t help but feel that the 2008 Sidewinders will be a formidable opponent once they’ve played together as a unit for awhile.  Lots of talent…some speedy youth…and some knowledgeable veterans.  It’s a mix that’s bound to provide us an exciting season!

Meanwhile, up at the gates…  I had my season debut in the ticket-taker role last night and spent half the time trying to figure out how to use the new “ticket clicker” devices we’ve been issued with which to get an accurate count of those who enter through our gates.  It’s amusing how much time we spent talking about how to use those things (well, we certainly had the time, since the crowd failed to materialize).  After closing up the Season Ticket Holder gate following the first pitch, I found I had one count from the turnstile…a different count from the clicker…and more tickets stubs than from either of the mechanical methods of counting fans.  Clearly I need more practice!  And I thought that only the ballplayers’ skills were rusty!

Oh but what fun to be back at the Park!  One of the neatest moments last night came when our pint-sized baseball buddies hit the field for a command performance of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh inning stretch.  I don’t think any of these kids were taller than my knee level – but dressed to the nines in Athletic’s uniforms and absolutely adorable!  It just goes to show you that even if you’re not a die-hard baseball fan, there’s plenty of fun things to enjoy at a Sidewinder’s game!

Tonight’s “Past Season Memorabilia” giveaway night at the Park.  The Winders continue their stand against the COS Sky Sox…first pitch at 6:30pm, gates open at 5:30.  Come on down and enjoy the game!

Are congratulations in order for your promotion to ticket taker? 😉
