Diamonds in the Desert: A Baseball Blog from Tucson

Talk Amongst Yourselves…

This will be my final update for a couple of weeks as I head out on vacation.  Meantime, I hope you’ll check out William K’s “Baby Backs” blog (he’s up now and again after dealing with cancer in the family) and the Winders’ official website for daily box scores.  Of course, you might also consider tuning in to Ryan Radtke’s excellent play-by-play coverage for every game the team plays.

Before I go, here’s an update on the last two games (tonight’s game is underway in Las Vegas) and a summary of the team’s schedule through July.

Sunday, July 6:  Sidewinders, 5; Bees, 3.  This is incredible news:  the Winders actually SWEPT a series against the Killer Bees at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake last week!  In the final of the three-game series, Evan MacLane pitched a humdinger of a game, getting his fifth win of the season with seven innings of three-run ball.  91 pitches – 62 for strikes!  Our boys struggled in the early innings and trailed through most of the game, until they put together a three-run eighth inning to take the lead.  Our pitching shut down the Bees through the rest of the game and we came out on top.  Imagine that:  the worst team in this Conference swept the best in the Conference.  Wow!

Monday, July 7:  Sidewinders, 4; Las Vegas 51s, 11.  How could a team that swept the Bees come back on the next night and simply tank a game against this Dodgers affiliate?  Story of the season:  pitching collapse…offense unable to put it all together.  Dang.  Matt Torra suffered his first AAA loss as last night’s starter (3 1/3 innings:  eight earned runs).  He just didn’t have it going.  He was followed by Dustin Glant who threw gas on the fire with four wild pitches and an additional three earned runs in his 3 2/3 innings.  Brandon Medders pitched the final inning – allowed a walk, but no runs.  Half of the Winder’s scoring came on two solo homers:  credit Phil Avlas (with his FIRST of the year) and Tim Raines Jr. with those dingers.  Timmy also got his 12th stolen base of the year.  Our guys totaled nine hits…left a few stranded.  We also committed two errors.  Sounds like the same old sad story of the season.

Transaction News.  AA Mobile’s needs trumped Tucson’s thin roster.  Ryan Radtke reported this evening that our reliever Jason Urquidez has been sent to the BayBears to help them out.  While a demotion from AAA, obviously, Jason is likely still delighted that he hasn’t been sent back to the Class A Visalia Oaks from whence he came to us!  Apparently, we will not be comped an additional player to take Jason’s place on the roster.

Sidewinder’s Schedule Through July

The Winders continue to play at Las Vegas tonight through Thursday, July 10th.  As always, you can catch the games on COOL 1450AM with Ryan Radtke.  Each game begins at 7:05pm.  (Tonight’s game is a back-and-forth affair to this point.  Not particularly pretty – though I did enjoy hearing Jamie’s homer! – but a tight contest.  Beats a blowout!)

July 11 – 13:  Sidewinders at TEP vs. Portland Beavers, AAA Affiliate of San Diego Padres:  includes a double-header on Sunday, July 13th!  (Who’s crazy idea was it to schedule a double-header in Tucson in the late summer?  Yikes!)  Check the Winder’s official website for news on other promotions and good deals available for each home game!

July 14 – 17:  All Star Break!  (Good Luck, Jamie!)

July 18 – 21:  Sidewinders at Tacoma vs. Rainiers, AAA Affiliate of Seattle Mariners

July 22 – 25:  Sidewinders at TEP vs. Iowa Cubs, AAA Affiliate of, uh, the Chicago Cubs (of course!)  (second hottest team in the PCL comes to town!)

July 26 – 29:  Sidewinders at TEP vs. Omaha Royals, AAA Affiliate of guess!!  Yes, it’s the KC Royals!  (always a treat to see these American Conference clubs here in Tucson)

July 30 – August 2:  Sidewinders at New Orleans vs. Zephyrs, AAA Affiliate of the NY Mets

Keep your eyes/ears on these guys for me until my return, ‘k’?  Cheers!  🙂
