Salazar’s Slam Wasted in Extra-Innings Loss

The story of last night’s game in New Orleans was home runs!  Our Jeff Salazar put the game nearly out of reach with a Grand Slam in the second inning (with two out!), but Winders pitchers couldn’t avoid allowing three separate home runs to Zephyrs’ batter, Valentino Pascucci.  Valentino accounted for five of the eight NOZ runs!  Tucson lost the game, seven to eight, in ten innings.  A heartbreaker!  Micah Owings took the start for the Snakes and pitched well beyond his expected pitch count, tossing six innings of 3-run ball (two homers in there).  He allowed four hits and three walks, hit a batter, and registered a wild pitch.  He also tossed six Ks and left the game with a six-three lead…which our bullpen couldn’t hold.  Not a bad outing for Micah.  He wasn’t a terror at the plate as a batter:  went oh for one…reached base when he was hit by a pitch.  He eventually scored on Salazar’s GS for his only offense of the game.  Connor Robertson followed Micah to the mound.  He allowed three runs (one came in on Reid Mahon, giving Reid the blown save for the game) on two hits and a walk.  Reid blew the save, though he was charged with no runs in his 1 2/3 innings of work.  NOZ scored those three runs in the eighth to tie the game…neither team scored in the ninth and I thought it was over and done and WE were winners, when the Winders put up a run in the top of the 10th!  But it was not to be…Dustin Glant earned the team’s second blown save of the game and the game’s loss when he allowed the Zephyrs to score two runs in the 10th to take the game – and the series – from the Snakes.  Glant tossed a costly wild pitch in addition to the three runs and one walk he allowed.  Doggone it!  Hit leaders for the Winders last night were Jesus Merchan with three and Phil Avlas with two.  The good guys committed no errors.
