Diamonds in the Desert: A Baseball Blog from Tucson

Welcome to the Tucson Padres!

In the bleak baseball off-season…we’ve actually had a lot of news to follow about Tucson’s latest attempt to host professional baseball.  In the past week, we’ve learned that Escondido will indeed build a permanent home for the former Portland Beavers…but that it will likely not be available for play until the 2013 season…setting Tucson up for a AAA team for both 2011 AND 2012!  Okay, so I’d hoped the bad economy might make the folks in Escondido think twice about spending so much on a risky proposition…but I’ll take two years of AAA baseball!

Before this news had made its rounds, we had a series of rather odd stories that suddenly called into question where this new Tucson team would be playing here in town.  Apparently, the new GM for the Tucson AAA team, Mike Feder, made a last-ditch effort to locate the new team at Hi Corbett Field, rather than at the field we used to know as Tucson Electric Park…  Mike was apparently trying to yield to fan desires to have the team more centrally located at Hi Corbett.  In what must surely be a bigger story than we’ve heard to date, Tucson Toros owner, Jay Zucker, declined to vacate his lease of Hi Corbett even though the Toros will not field a team in 2011.  Since that time, Feder has succeeded in finalizing a contract with the County for use of Kino Stadium (that’s what we now call the former TEP!).

Additionally, we have officially learned that the AAA team here will, in fact, be called the Tucson Padres.  While I’d hoped for something more imaginative, there is something to that name.  Tucson does have a history of missions similar to that of San Diego…afterall, the Tucson Padres will be playing in Kino Stadium…Father Kino anyone?  Yes, the Padres does work for this city!

Mike Feder has gone on record as planning to make Tucson Padres baseball affordable and fun.  Mike posts regularly on FaceBook (as the Tucson Padres) – check it out if you want all the up-to-the-minute news about the coming of AAA baseball to Tucson in 2011.

It looks like you’ll have at least one year before you have to start rooting for Lech Poznan.
