There Goes Rizzo…

The big news if you’re a Padres fan (either in San Diego or in Tucson) is that 1B Anthony Rizzo has been called up to The Show and should start the game in San Diego tonight.  This was just a matter of time and certainly the folks in San Diego have been impatiently waiting as this 21-year old has torn up the field in AAA action.  Now’s his chance.  And, perhaps, now the rest of the Tucson Padres team will get a chance to shine.  I don’t mean to belittle Rizzo:  he’s hit for power, hit for average, and his story about beating cancer is amazing.  His IS a great story!  But part of me has felt bad when all the press (and we’re talking national level) has been on this one player who only joined the Padres this season (in the Adrian Gonzalez deal with Boston).  We’ve got some outstanding players who have toiled their way through the Padres farm system and they’ve been completely overshadowed by the Rizzo-effect this season.  Now let’s give THEM our attention…

Other Transactions…  With the focus on Rizzo, perhaps these additional moves by the San Diego team have escaped your attention…  The Parent Unit has also called up Evan Scribner (again) and Will Venable (getting another shot).  Aaron Cunningham will be rejoining the Tucson team and we’re getting Kyle Blanks from the San Antonio Missions.  Additionally, C Nick Hundley ended his rehab assignment and returned to San Diego.

Tuesday, June 7th…Split Series with Tacoma!  Tucson took the bookends in the four-games with the Rainiers, winning Tuesday night’s game nine to one.  Starter Wade LeBlanc earned his fifth win of the season with his seven innings of one-run ball (that run came on a solo homer to the first batter in the game).  Hundley closed out his rehab assignment with a bang:  two for three with two doubles and two RBIs and one-run scored.  No Tucson homers and one error, but our bats were once again in the right gear and our pitching stabilized.  Very cool to see the T-Pads hold the Rainiers to a single run after the two crazy blowouts in the middle of the series!

It’s Time for the Chicken!!   The Famous San Diego Chicken will be in town tomorrow night, as Tucson kicks off a four-game series with the Las Vegas 51s at Kino Stadium.  It’s also not too early to get your tickets for the Fourth of July Star Spangled Spectacular!  All you former Sidewinders fans should know that the T-Pads will be playing the new DBacks AAA affiliate Reno Aces on that date – what a match up!  Fireworks on the field and off!  Check Promos here.
