IL Beats PCL; T-Pads in Fort Wayne

Tucson resumes regular season play again tonight at Fort Wayne, Indiana.  Meantime, here’s the latest story lines…

July 13th – Pacific Coast League 0; International League 3.  In a game that went down as a pitcher’s duel, the IL beat the PCL on a three-run homer by the visiting IL in the second inning.  Because of an error by the PCL infield, all three runs were unearned.  Our own OF Aaron Cunningham did his best to help the PCL.  In the seventh inning he took a walk, made it to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a groundout.  The IL loaded the bases, but succeeded in getting a strikeout to end the threat before the PCL could get a run in.  Aaron was otherwise oh for one as a replacement player in the game.  The PCL was able to amass only three hits, compared to six for the IL.  Complete story from MiLB here:  IL_Wins

Why Fort Wayne?  Although playing in a state far, far away from Tucson, the T-Pads will actually be the home team in the four-game series versus the Las Vegas 51s starting tonight in Fort Wayne IN.  When the PCL schedules were hammered out some time ago, it appeared the former Portland Beavers would be playing their 2011 season sharing facilities with the High-A franchise Lake Elsinore (CA) Storm.  The dates for this particular series were not available in Lake Elsinore when scheduling was completed, and so the series was moved to another of the Padres’ single A ballparks, Parkview Field in Fort Wayne.  As it happens, ten of our current players have spent time in Fort Wayne, and it’s a welcome homecoming for many of them.  Neat article by Sarah Trotto in today’s Arizona Daily Star here:  Fort_Wayne

Transactions.  C Ali Solis has been assigned to Tucson from AA San Antonio.  C Rocky Gale has been assigned to A Lake Elsinore Storm from Tucson.  Although the transaction site doesn’t mention it, I’m fairly certain Tucson has also activated James Darnell off the temporarily inactive list (although he’s not on our roster yet, either).

Looking Ahead.   The Padres will play a four-game series against Las Vegas 51s in Fort Wayne IN beginning tonight, and will return to Tucson for a four-game series vs. the Tacoma Rainiers, beginning on Monday, July 18th.  Check local Promos here.
