The Tucson Padres returned to a much improved infield…a small crowd…and threatening monsoon clouds for the first of four against the Tacoma Rainiers last night.  It was a loss, but the guys stayed in the game until their last at-bats and gave the Rainiers a run for their money.

July 18th – Tucson 5; Tacoma 6. Our new starting pitcher, John Van Benschoten, had me worried in the first inning when he gave up a solo home run to the first batter he faced, and only on the second pitch!  (BTW, good write up on John in today’s paper here.)  But John got better as the evening progressed, though he still went down with the loss:  five innings, two runs (one earned), three hits, two walks, and five Ks.  Our offense put ten hits up on the board (versus only eight for Tacoma), but only one of those was for extra bases (a double by CF Eric Patterson who also made some spectacular plays on the field).  Blanked until the seventh inning when we finally got three runs, the T-Pads did a nice job of playing “little ball” to score runs.  One error, but two double-plays turned.  My offensive leader of the game:  Matt Clark.  Two for four, with two RBIs and one run-scored.  I was tickled when our new youngster, Alberth Martinez, finally got his first AAA hit in his final at-bat.

There Ought To Be An App For That!  As I watched a fan using his smart phone to take a picture of one of the players taking his turn up at bat, I realized that the perfect smart phone app would be a “speed gun” app!  Since the Kino scoreboard doesn’t have any indication of pitch speed, it’d be a ton of fun to have your own speed gun right there on your phone!

Transactions. It seems that every time the team returns home, we have an entirely new lineup to get used to.  Of course that’s not literally true, but it has been difficult keeping up with the changes on a daily basis.  Although I knew Van Benschoten would be starting, I was surprised when I got to the park and noted a new name in OF on the roster:  Alberth Martinez.  He has been called up from AZL Padres to fill in for OF Cedric Hunter.  Although not reflected in the MiLB PCL Transaction list, Cedric has apparently been placed on the 7-day DL with a groin strain suffered in Ft. Wayne.  LHP Joe Thatcher has also been assigned to Tucson on a MLB rehab assignment.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame!  Three more vs. the Tacoma Rainiers here at Kino (including tonight’s contest). Check local Promos here. Let’s show the Padres organization we want this team to stay in Tucson: let’s get out to these games!
