Sox Take Game One

While Anthony Rizzo provided potent offense for the T-Pads, the team came up just a tad short against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Kino last night.

July 26th – Tucson 5; Colorado Springs 6.   Tucson starter, RHP Samuel Deduno, had another difficult outing as he went six innings for a loss (his third).  While throwing a decent number of strikes (98 to 64 isn’t a bad ratio!), he did allow a lot of hits (11) and all six of the Sox (earned) runs.  No walks…and two Ks.  Samuel did hit a batter and was charged with a wild pitch.  Our offense also took some time to get warmed up.  They posted a run in the first, but then watched as the Sox posted four unanswered runs.  Rizzo earned the first RBI in the game with a sacrifice fly to bring in Everth Cabrera; then he brought Everth home again in the fifth on a double and he did it again in the seventh with a two-run homer!  Rizzo ended up with four RBIs after going three for four at the plate.  Everth was one for three with three runs-scored.  C Guillermo Quiroz had Tucson’s only other RBI: a sacrifice fly in the eighth.  It was our final run in the game.  Tucson hit seven doubles last night:  Aaron Cunningham had two.  One home-team error (James Darnell’s first of the season).

Transactions.  As I listened to last night’s DBacks game vs. San Diego I became aware that the organization made some moves that hadn’t been reflected on the transactions site when I posted yesterday.  Here’s what transpired:  San Diego optioned C Kyle Phillips to Tucson and recalled our C Luis Martinez to play in the Bigs again!  SD RHP Ernesto Frieri went on the paternity leave list, so SD recalled RHP Pat Neshek from Tucson.  Both Luis and Pat ended up playing in last night’s loss in San Diego.  San Diego’s starting catcher came out of the game early after being hit on the throwing (ungloved) hand; if that injury is sufficient to put him on the DL it’ll be interesting to see what move the organization makes to backfill his position.  (And I’m still looking to see what might happen at the trade deadline…)

And, Speaking of San Diego…  Since they’re on the local radio, I end up listening to a lot of DBack’s baseball.  As I’ve mentioned before, it’s really hard to figure out my baseball loyalty this season.  After years of supporting the DBacks, I find it hard to break that habit…and given San Diego’s season, well…  I’m just not that into the Parent Pads.  But I was excited to hear last night’s game, especially since my man, former T-Pad 3B, Jesus Guzman has been getting some time starting for SD.  As it happens, last night was a good night to be a Guzman fan!  Oh sure, San Diego lost, but Guuuuzzz (as Tucson GM Mike Feder was starting to call him right before his call-up) had a good night.  He was one of only two Padres to get more than one hit in the game and he made his second hit count!  Bottom of the ninth, two outs, none on, DBack starter Joe Saunders looking for a complete game SHUTOUT…Jesus to the plate…one pitch and WHACK!  Solo home run for Jesus!  The Pad’s only run of the game (and somewhat “meaningless” in the face of the DBack’s six runs); at least it ended the shutout!  Well done, Jesus!  (And yes, when they leave San Diego, I’ll be back to cheering for the DBacks…)

Missing Sarah.  This is the first homestand since The Arizona Daily Star laid off sportswriter, Sarah Trotto.  And it shows, too, in the paper’s coverage of our Padres.  In the past, whenever the team was in town, Sarah would prepare some in-depth article on some aspect of the team or its players.  Sadly, that was missing today.  True, they had a picture from last night’s game and a general (no byline) recap of the contest w/box score…but no special story to further introduce us to the team.  Sigh.

Home Now!   The T-Pads play three more at Kino vs. the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.  Lots of great promotions on tap for this homestand: and a very special deal TONIGHT for all Facebook Fans of the T-Pads!  Promos
