New Guys Galore!

By the time I returned from dinner with family in town, the Tucson Padres were ahead of the Nashville Sounds by a single run in the top of the eighth.  And then, as if I was bad luck, the T-Pads gave up two runs to the Sounds…and couldn’t quite climb back out of the hole to tie or win the game.  So, Sounds one, Tucson one thus far in the series.  Two more to go:  we can still win the series!

Friday, May 18:  Tucson 3, Nashville 4.  It’s getting hard to keep track of who’s playing for Tucson these days!  After gaining two new guys for Everth Cabrera and Alexi Amarista on Thursday, last night’s game featured two new pitchers just added to our roster.  Former big leaguer, Kip Wells, started for Tucson and took the first five innings, allowing two unearned runs (which is rather funny, because he caused two errors that made those runs unearned) on four hits and one walk.  He struck out two.  The other new guy, RHP Anthony Reyes, took the next 2 2/3 innings and allowed the final two Nashville runs (both earned), to get the loss in the game.  Nashville took the early lead with their first two runs in the second, but  Tucson tied that with two of their own in the third as Blake Tekotte hit a solo homer (blazing away as leadoff hitter – he went three for five in the game, with a double and the homer) followed by an RBI single off Yasmani Grandal’s bat.  Tucson took the lead with a single run in the sixth when Sawyer Carroll batted in Grandal and there it sat until I tuned in for the eighth.  A-Reyes got one out, allowed a single to Eric Farris, got another out, but then Farris stole second and reached third on a wild pitch.  Tying run just 90-feet away!  And A-Reyes seemed  rattled…he walked the next two batters and that was the end of his AAA Tucson debut.  Erik Hamren took the mound and allowed a single that scored two (both charged to A-Reyes) before he got the final out in the inning.  Tucson had a decent chance to comeback in the eighth, getting runners on the corners with no outs, but a double play saved the day for the Sounds.  Tucson got another two base runners in the ninth, but again came up empty.  Close, close!   Four errors on the night for Tucson – clean those things up and we’re golden!  Come on, Tucson – let’s get ‘em tonight!

Transactions and Injury Report.  This transaction posted after my report yesterday:  Anthony Reyes was added to Tucson’s roster from the Padres’ Extended Spring Training.

Fun Homestand Continues!   Tucson continues their stand against the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers AAA affiliate) for the next two nights, followed by four games against the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals AAA affiliate).  Lots of fun events at Kino during this homestand:  check them out here.  Tonight’s special is the Tucson Padres Military T-Shirt Giveaway.  In honor of Armed Forces Day, the first 2,000 adults, 17 and older, with paid admission will receive a free Tucson Padres Military T-Shirt.  You know you want one of those!
