Tucson Win Guarantees Series Split

When Tucson’s starter, Jorge Reyes, gave up solo home runs in each of the first two innings last night, I just had this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that it might be the night Nashville teed off, inning after inning, pounding the T-Pads into the ground.  Thankfully, that was not to be!  Tucson picked up the pace on offense in the bottom of the second and J-Reyes (and the relievers who followed him) held the Sounds scoreless through the rest of the game!  The turnaround began when Matt Clark led off the bottom of the second with a solo homer that cut Nashville’s lead in half; Beamer Weems then brought Yasmani Grandal in with an RBI single.  Game tied at two after two!  Two scoreless innings followed before Tucson took advantage of opportunities to go ahead in the game.  Jonathan Roof, getting his first start for Tucson, led off the fifth with his first AAA single.  J-Reyes advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt, and both Daniel Robertson and Logan Forsythe took a walk (Logan’s was hotly contested…in fact, the Sounds’ pitching coach was ejected by the home plate umpire for appearing to question the call as he went out to visit with his pitcher) to load the bases with Padres.  Once the ejection mess settled down, Jedd Gyorko stepped up and earned his first AAA RBI with a nice sacrifice fly that scored Roof.  The Sounds made a pitching change and then faced Clark; he’s plunked by a pitch and the bases are again loaded with Padres!  Grandal gets an RBI with a walk and then Sawyer Carroll gets an RBI single before Beamer flies out to end the inning.  Tucson up by three!  Roof again led off the sixth and walked…J-Reyes again advanced him to second with a sac bunt (great execution on the mound and at the plate for Jorge!)…another Nashville pitching change and D-Rob greets him with a single – Roof to third!  While Logan was at the plate (again!), a passed ball scored Roof…Logan coaxed out another walk.  Although Jedd (and then Matt) struck out, D-Rob and Logan stole a base during his at-bat.  Exciting stuff!  Another Tucson run on the board.  The Sounds went down quietly in the seventh, got a couple on but did not score in the eighth (against Josh Spence), and our Jason Ray closed out the game with a swift one-two-three ninth to end the game!  Final Score – Tucson 6, Nashville 2.  With the win, Tucson is guaranteed AT LEAST a series split with the Sounds.  Could this be the night when our T-Pads WIN a series??  Fingers crossed – Go Tucson!

Transactions and Injury Report.  When Broadcaster Tim Hagerty called out the starting lineups, I noticed immediately that OF Blake Tekotte was not starting and batting leadoff.  Within seconds, Tim clarified the situation:  Blake has been recalled – again! – by the Parent Unit!   Let’s hope it goes better for him this time up in The Show!  (I’m hoping he’ll get a start or two and not just ride the bench!)  Just look at what our Alexi Amarista did for San Diego last night!  He scored the first two runs in the Pads’ win over the Angels and then doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning!  Way to go, Alexi!  Other moves today:  San Diego optioned Nick Vincent from San Diego to Tucson (this baffles me…when did Nick go to San Diego??) and called up Matt Palmer to the Bigs.  (San Diego has won again today – beating the Angels in 13 innings!  Neither Blake nor Everth Cabrera had a hit in multiple at-bats; Alexi had a double and a stolen base.)

Fun Homestand Continues!   Tucson’s final game for 2012 against Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers AAA affiliate) is tonight.  Beginning tomorrow evening, the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals AAA affiliate) will be in town for another four-game series.  Lots of fun events at Kino during this homestand:  check them out here.  Sundays are ALWAYS heavy on promotions like Bark in the Park, Military Appreciation, and Little League night!  Tons of ways to get into the Park with reduced admission – check it out!
