One-Run Game Pattern Continues

After a 21-minute delay to start the game while the grounds crew cleaned up after early evening storms (which only teased us here in NW Tucson), the Tucson Padres once again faced off against the Tacoma Rainiers…this time here at Kino Stadium.  Both teams sent in relative youngsters for the start.  Tucson used LHP Andrew Werner, just called up from AA San Antonio;  Tacoma went with one of the hottest pitching prospects in the Mariner’s organization, LHP Danny Hultzen.  It wasn’t a pitcher’s duel.  A Tucson error in the first helped Tacoma score a run in the top of the inning;  Tucson came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame (Daniel Robertson led off the inning with a double and Andy Parrino followed, reaching first when he was hit by a pitch.  Both scored:  RBIs to Jedd Gyorko and Matt Clark).  Both pitchers held the opposition off the board in the next two innings (though Werner allowed one runner to reach in each of those innings), taking us to the fourth…  Werner got two outs and then totally lost his feel for the strike zone, allowing a single and two consecutive walks to load the bases.  Rainier leadoff hitter, Darren Ford, then burst the game wide open with a grand slam homer!  Four runs score for Tacoma as they re-take the lead, five to two.  The T-Pads went down quietly in their half of the fourth and Werner actually shutdown the Rainiers one-two-three in the fifth.  I was beginning to think we weren’t going to be able to shake Hultzen out of his groove, but he finally showed some vulnerability in the bottom of the fifth.  He walked Sawyer Carroll to lead off the inning, struck out Blake Tekotte, allowed Rocky Gale a walk, got D-Rob to ground out, and gave up a two run single to Andy!  Jedd then flew out to end the inning.  T-Pads now down by only one run!  Werner in to start the sixth – he got a K, but then allowed a single and a double…and his day was done.  Reliever Jason Ray to the mound next…he struck out the first batter he faced, but then allowed Mr. Ford a two-run single, before getting the last out in the inning.  Tucson down by three once again.  Amazingly, the Pads would get those three runs in the bottom of the sixth, chasing Hultzen in the process.  Matt Clark led off the inning and was called out on strikes – he tried to hold up his swing and was disgusted that the home plate ump didn’t ask for help with the call from the 3B ump…Matt vented a bit and was tossed from the game (replaced by Vince Belnome at first and in the lineup);  Manager Terry Kennedy was tossed soon after for continuing the discussion with the home plate ump.  So, one down.  But Jesus Merchan follows with a single, as does Jeremy Hermida.  Sawyer walks to load the bases and Blake flew out.  Two down.  And here comes Rocky!  For some reason, he flourishes in these situations!  And did so once, again, whacking out a two-run single.  Pitching change and D-Rob’s back at the plate.  He reaches first – and the third run scores – on an error;  Andy then ended the inning with a ground out.  (Man, it is storming like CRAZY here – hate being online with lightning…pick up the pace, dude!)  So end of six and the game is tied seven all.  Fast forward through our relievers to last night’s T-Pad closer, Miles Mikolas.  Miles has the misfortune of facing Mr. Ford first thing.  Ford gets on with a single, steals second, reaches third on the next batter’s ground out, stays at third for the second out in the Tacoma half of the inning…and then scores what would be the winning run when Miles overthrew Rocky on an intentional walk toss!  Oh no!  Tucson was unable to get push a run across in the bottom of the ninth, in spite of getting two on with two out.  Darn!  Another close game, though with a far higher score than what we’ve seen in the past few games between these two teams!  Double-header tonight (if the weather’s better down there than it is here) – let’s go T-Pads!!  Final Score:  Tucson 7; Tacoma 8.

Transactions and Injury Report.   I don’t see anything new to report today.

Homestand Continues Tonight.   The T-Pads face the Tacoma Rainiers at Kino Stadium for another four games in three days.  Tonight the teams will face-off in a double-header:  there will be two seven-inning games, beginning at 6:05pm.  Lots of special deals on tap, too!  In addition to the usual Sunday promotions (Military Appreciation and Bark in the Park) the staff is also offering a special ticket deal for anyone who brings a Church/Worship Bulletin to the Ticket Office.  Take your worship bulletin to the Ticket Office and get a Buy One / Get One Free on any priced ticket for anyone in your party!  Tomorrow night features the usual KiiM-FM Family Four Pack promotion PLUS it’s Matt Clark Poster giveaway night!  The first 2,000 fans through the gates with paid admission will receive a free 11” x 14” Collector’s Poster featuring first baseman Matt Clark.
