The Games Of the 30th Olympiad Are Closed

I don’t know about you, but I enjoyed the Closing Ceremonies for the London Olympics a ton!  Yes, I wish the sound quality was better…but what a treat to be reminded of the significant impact Britain has had on the world’s pop music scene over the years.  In many ways, I found the Ceremonies to be a summary of my life story as they ambled through their most famous musicians of recent decades passed.  The tribute to John Lennon and “Imagine” was powerful and a perfect fit for the Olympics where one could imagine a world of peaceful competition between the nations…we’d just seen it happen!   And then there was that piece where hunky George Michaels performed, looking like a totally different dude without that mane of hair he could toss around as a kid with “Wham!,” reminding me of my own faded-youth.  And Queen’s Brian May – still with the monster BIG hair, but now of a decidedly aged color – working the guitar in a way that used to inspire awe in my college roommate and me back in the day when “We Will Rock You” was still fresh and had nothing to do with baseball games (remember how they used to brag about their productions being done with “no synthesizers?”  Oh how we loved them for that!).  And yes, indeed, I am doing all I can to avoid talking about last night’s Tucson Padres’ game!  First of all…I was watching the Closing Ceremonies.  But secondly…well, the Omaha Storm Chasers took our Pads out to the shed and gave them a horrific beating!  I don’t even want to talk about it, but the final score was Tucson 3, Omaha 20 (she said in a whispery voice).  If you care to delve into the sad details, you can do so here.  With each game the Pads have played against Omaha the results have been worse than the night before.  Let’s hope they break that spell tonight and win this final contest, preventing a Storm Chaser-sweep!

Transactions and Injury Report.   As expected after his injury the other night, San Diego had to place closer Huston Street on the 15-day DL (strained left calf).  They called up our RHP Cory Burns once again to fill the gap.

Fun-Filled Homestand Continues!   The T-Pads are home for one more against the Omaha Storm Chasers (KC Royals AAA affiliate); then the Iowa Cubs (betcha can guess their affiliation!) will be in town for four.  (It’s worth noting that the I-Cubs are the only team in the PCL with a worse record than our own Tucson Padres…maybe our boys will treat us to a home-field sweep against the Junior Cubs!!)  Tonight is KiiM-FM Four Pack and Kino Bambino Poster Giveaway Night!   The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a free poster from Mister Car Wash featuring the Kino Bambino. A group or family of four can get four box seats, four hot dogs, and four soft drinks FOR ONLY $20 – a $70 value!  All you have to do is mention KiiM-FM or the Arizona Daily Star at the Padres Box Office.  Tomorrow night is eegee’s Night at the ballpark!  Stop by your favorite eegee’s restaurant in the Tucson area and get your FREE tickets to this game.

20!!! OMG, sorry to see our home team lose so soundly, but that’s a lot of action for a baseball game.

Yeah…it sounded like a football (American style) score! Not exactly the kind of action you want when it’s working against your home team. A lot of Tucson Padre FaceBook fans were complaining about the officiating, as well. But really, a team doesn’t get 33 hits (four short of an all-time PCL record!) and 20 runs on bad calls alone!! PLUS there were ejections and vented-frustrations (see my post today in the About Last Night section). Crazy game.
