Sellout Crowd Witnesses Padres’ Win!

Sadly, the sellout crowd was in Fresno…but still!  A larger-than-capacity crowd showed up at Chukchansi Park last night to see their Fresno Grizzlies – tied for first place in our Division – battle our Tucson Padres.  Well, maybe a lot of those fans showed up because it was (Giants) World Series replica ring giveaway night (folks actually camped out over night to ensure they would get a ring!  See this article for more on that), but they ended up catching a dandy baseball game with the freebie!  It was the second meeting of these two teams in a week: last week in Tucson Fresno won the series.  But now our T-Pads had the momentum of a winning streak pushing them as they faced the Grizzlies on their turf.  Fans definitely got their money’s worth…it was a thriller of a game!  Tucson never trailed, though that became an iffy thing in the later innings.  The Pads greeted Fresno’s starter, Chris Heston, with two consecutive singles; both runners later scored (sac fly and a couple Grizzly errors bringing them home) giving Tucson the early lead.  Fresno cut that lead in half with a solo home run in the third, but Tucson immediately put up two more runs in the fourth to keep a solid lead.  Fresno put up another run in the fourth and that was enough to chase our starter, Keyvius Sampson, from the game, though Tucson still held a lead.  Jorge Reyes got a one-two-three inning in the fifth and struck out the first two batters in the sixth before things got a bit crazy.  Fresno got a double and an RBI single and another single…and Manager Pat Murphy pulled J-Reyes for lefty Tommy Layne.  Bases loaded, two out, one run in…and I’m sweating it out!  Can Tommy break out of his funk with first-batter efficiency and get this batter out?  He’s facing Fresno’s Kensuke Tanaka, who has a hefty batting average of .345 with one hit in the game.  And Tommy does it – he gets a fly ball out to end the inning!  Whew!  Tucson was able to get one more run in the seventh, for a five to three lead that held into the eighth.  Miles Mikolas on the mound for the eighth – and he allows a run…but that was fortunate because he had given up a single, two walks, and another runner reached on an error.  Allowing only one run in the inning was a huge break for Tucson.  But the fireworks weren’t over yet.  Tucson went down harmlessly in the top of the ninth and sent Brad Boxberger in to pitch the bottom of the frame.  Brad issued two singles to start the inning then a sac bunt advanced those runners (though did give us an out!).  The Pads intentionally walk the next batter to load the bases.  Oh, that makes me nervous!  But then Brad gets a strike out!  Two down!  Fresno sends a pinch hitter to the plate…two pitches and whack!  Fly ball…but my man Daniel Robertson snags the ball for the final out of the inning!  Tucson wins its fourth consecutive game!  Whew – that was too close for comfort!  But another win!  Way to go, T-Pads!  Final Score:  Tucson 5; Fresno 4.

Today’s Game – the Dean Anna Show!  Today’s day game in Fresno is ongoing as I write this.  RHP Tim Stauffer on the mound for Tucson with his third start.  The game is currently in the seventh inning – all of Tucson’s scoring has been on the home run!  INF Dean Anna hit his first AAA homer in the second inning, a two-run blast that gave Tucson the lead.  Fresno tied it up, but then came the top of the fifth!  INF Jonathan Galvez smacked out a deep, out-of-the-complex, two-out, two-run homer that chased Fresno’s starter from the game.  Dean greeted the Grizzlies’ reliever with his second home run of the day!  Tucson leading the Grizzlies, five to two!

Transactions.  RHP Thad Weber has once again been called up to San Diego.  He’s taking the place of an injured SD hurler, so it’s likely he’ll stay up there longer this time than last.  Look for the organization to shuffle another pitcher up from the lower levels to help bridge the gap in Tucson.

T-Pads Are Still in Fresno.  Our Padres are in Fresno CA for two more games against the Grizzlies (SF Giants AAA affiliate).  The games tomorrow and Tuesday will begin at 7:05pm – you can follow both LIVE locally on 1290AM The Source or off the Tucson Padres website.  The T-Pads return home to kick off a quick four-game series versus the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (AAA affiliate of the CO Rockies) beginning April 25th.  That’ll be the second Thirsty Thursday of the season:  dollar beverages!  Make your plans now to catch a game at Kino Stadium!
