Cosmic Meltdown

When LHP Robbie Erlin is scheduled to start, I always feel a sense of confidence about the game’s outcome…he’s been our winningest starter and has had excellent control.  Even though he lost a recent outing against Sacramento I wasn’t at all worried about seeing Robbie face the Aces last night.  Well, it turns out that even Robbie can have an extremely off night on the mound.  In last night’s game vs. Reno, Robbie allowed 11 runs in just two innings of work.  The first inning was an absolute nightmare:  the Aces scored nine runs!  There was a three-run homer and a grand slam in the mix as Robbie faced 12 Aces before getting three outs.  I was really surprised that Manager Pat Murphy let him take the second inning…but he did.  Only two runs in that frame.  But that was the end of Robbie’s evening.  Wilfredo Boscan came on in relief…he got through two innings without allowing Reno to score and during that time the T-Pad’s offense put two runs up on the board (so at least we would not be shut out again!).  Boscan had his meltdown in the fifth inning, allowing six runs to score.  The Aces pulled off another three-run homer in that frame, too!  Boscan was pulled for Jorge Reyes, who got the final out in the inning…and then worked two more complete scoreless frames!  Tucson put up another two runs in the bottom of the sixth and added two on Brandon Allen’s two-run homer in the seventh.  Brad Brach pitched a one-two-three eighth for the Pads and the Amazing Jesus Merchan pitched the ninth.  Jesus gave up the first earned run of his pitching career – but only one.  Cody Decker slugged out a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth before Reno quickly dispatched the Pads to end the game.  A disappointing thing, this blowout loss.  But:  not a shutout!  Tucson’s offense showed a lot more life – and basic little-ball production – than on Saturday night.  That’s a really good thing!  And we still have one more against Reno – I’m hoping for a series split tonight!  (Sacramento won again – so we’re now four back of first place, in a tie with Vegas for second.  Our record IS still above .500!)  Come on, Tucson – beat these Aces!  Final Score:  Tucson 7; Reno 18.

Transactions.  I don’t see anything new to report at this time.
